A view of Broadway Tower

Broadway Tower

A 65-foot folly on the second-highest point of the Cotswolds, built in 1798 and once a bolthole for William Morris and the Pre-Raphaelites.

About

Designed by James Wyatt for the 6th Earl of Coventry — reputedly so that the Countess could see a beacon lit on her hill from her drawing room at Croome — the tower commands a view across sixteen counties on a clear day.

William Morris rented it from 1876 onwards as a country retreat with his Pre-Raphaelite friends; an exhibition inside the tower commemorates this period. The surrounding deer park is a fine short walk in any season.

In Broadway

A wide, lime-lined high street, once a hub of the Arts and Crafts movement, watched over by the folly of Broadway Tower.
