GWSR Steam Railway

About

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) is a 14-mile preserved heritage line running along the western Cotswold escarpment between Cheltenham Racecourse and Broadway. It is laid on the trackbed of the former Honeybourne Line — once part of the Great Western's Cheltenham–Birmingham route — which closed to passengers in 1968 and was closed entirely by British Rail in 1976 following a derailment near Winchcombe. Volunteers began restoring the line in 1981 and have been extending it ever since; the final push to Broadway opened in 2018.

The railway is headquartered at Toddington, which houses the locomotive sheds, the carriage and wagon works and the principal car park — for most visitors it is the easiest place to begin. The full line takes in six stops: Cheltenham Racecourse and Gotherington at the southern end, Winchcombe (with the engineering works), Toddington (HQ) in the middle, the request halt at Hayles Abbey, and Broadway at the northern terminus. The line is run almost entirely by volunteers and the rolling stock includes a working fleet of restored steam locomotives and the iconic chocolate-and-cream GWR carriages.
