About
Cattle have grazed Minchinhampton Common since at least the 13th century under medieval pasturage rights, and the open land is still managed by the local commoners and the National Trust together. The grass is short, the wildflowers are abundant in spring, and red kites are now a daily sight overhead.
The Bulwarks — Iron Age earthworks crossing the high ground — were built around 50 BC and read most clearly on a low-light winter afternoon. Tom Long's Post, the high crossroads near the centre of the common, has the longest views: the Mendips to the south, the Malverns to the north, and the Severn Vale to the west.
The Cotswold Guide Top Tips
- Drive to Tom Long's Post for the best views; the road is open but watch for cattle.
- The Old Lodge pub is hidden in the trees on the south side of the common, signed from the road.
