About
Created in the 1730s and '40s by the Bath quarry-owner Ralph Allen with input from the poet Alexander Pope and (briefly) Capability Brown, Prior Park frames the city below across a sequence of cascading lakes, beech woods and follies.
The set-piece is the Palladian Bridge of 1755 — one of only four in the world (the others are at Stowe, Wilton, and Tsarskoye Selo near St Petersburg). The garden is steep; sturdy footwear and an unhurried hour are advised. There is no on-site car park — the National Trust runs a frequent shuttle bus from the city centre.

A Roman spa, a Georgian crescent and a literary capital — Bath sits where the Cotswolds meet the West Country.
