Pulteney Bridge

One of only four bridges in the world with shops on both sides — Robert Adam's 1774 Palladian crossing of the River Avon.

About

Designed by Robert Adam in 1774 for William Pulteney, the bridge was built to connect the city centre to a planned new town on the eastern side of the Avon. The Italian Renaissance influence — small shops set into both sides, façades unbroken across the river — makes it unlike any other bridge in Britain.

Stand on Grand Parade just downstream of the bridge for the classic view; the elegant horseshoe-shaped weir below was added in the 1970s to control flooding.
