St Edward's Church, Stow

The medieval parish church on Stow's market square — best known for the ancient north door framed between two yew trees, often said to have inspired Tolkien.

About

St Edward's has stood in some form since at least the 11th century, with most of the present fabric dating to a 15th-century rebuild paid for by the wool trade. The interior is light and lofty — typical of a Cotswold 'wool church'.

The much-photographed north door is hemmed by two enormous yews that have grown around the stonework. The story that J.R.R. Tolkien drew on the door for the Doors of Durin in The Lord of the Rings is local lore — pleasant to believe, hard to prove.
