The Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling has been held on the escarpment above Brockworth for at least 200 years, though local historians argue it goes back much further. Held on the Spring Bank Holiday Monday — Monday 31 May 2027 — competitors chase an 8lb Double Gloucester cheese down a 200-metre slope that reaches 45° in places. The cheese hits 70mph before the racers do; the winner (first to the bottom) keeps it.
Five races run through the afternoon: three men's, one women's, and a children's uphill race. There's no formal organiser — the event is entirely unofficial, un-marshalled and un-insured, which is part of its enduring myth. Ambulance crews are stationed at the base of the hill; injuries are near-guaranteed.
Free to attend and there's no ticket. Parking is tight — most visitors walk in from Brockworth. It gets crowded: aim to be on the hill by lunchtime for a decent view.
