Kingham

England's 'favourite village'

About Kingham

Kingham was named England's favourite village by Country Life magazine in 2004, and the description has stuck. The village proper is small — green, church, post office, station — but the surrounding parish has become the gastronomic centre of the Cotswolds, with two of the country's most reviewed pubs and the Daylesford organic estate within walking distance.

The railway station is a quiet halt on the Cotswold Line and a useful Cotswolds entry-point for visitors arriving by train without a car.

The Cotswold Guide Top Tips

  • The Wild Rabbit pub fills up on weekend evenings — book a week ahead, or eat early at the bar.
  • Walk to Daylesford via the footpath through Foscot — about 30 minutes each way, and a far better arrival than driving.

Where to eat & drink

  • The Wild Rabbit

Lady Bamford's pub-with-rooms; a Michelin star in the dining room and an unstuffy bar.

  • Daylesford Café

Wood-fired pizzas, all-day menu and seasonal produce from the farm next door.

  • The Kingham Plough

Independent village pub a few yards from the station — proper food and Hook Norton ales.

Getting there

  • By train

direct from London Paddington (1h30); a useful station for the rural Cotswolds.

  • By car

5 miles south of Chipping Norton on the B4450.

Best time to visit

Year-round; the village is busy when Daylesford runs cooking events. Country Life made it famous in 2004, and the foodie reputation has only grown since.
