About Minchinhampton
Minchinhampton's high point is not the small Georgian town centre but the 600 acres of common land that surround it. Cattle have grazed Minchinhampton Common since at least Saxon times under rules called pasturage rights, and Iron Age earthworks — the Bulwarks — cross the high ground.
On a clear day the views from the common reach south to the Mendips and north to the Malverns. The town below has a single market square, three pubs and a long beautiful arcade: the 17th-century Market House, given to the town by Philip Sheppard in 1698.
The Cotswold Guide Top Tips
- Drive across the common to Tom Long's Post for the longest views; cattle have right of way on the open road.
- The Old Lodge is tucked away behind the trees on the south side — follow the brown signs from Tom Long's Post.
