About Notgrove

Notgrove sits on the high wolds between Bourton-on-the-Water and Cheltenham, a single-street village of Cotswold-stone cottages, a Norman church, and the gates of the Notgrove Estate. There is only one cafe there, 'The Nuttery', which provides a welcome stop for walkers and cyclists. There is no through traffic so the village retains its quiet charm.

The land has been farmed continuously since at least the Domesday Book and is still worked as a family estate today, with holiday cottages, walking paths and a small farm shop set among the working buildings.

The Cotswold Guide view

Notgrove is a beautiful quiet little village which retains its charm. Why not park at The Nuttery, take a gentle stroll around the circular village road, enjoying the beautiful village and landscape, then have a snack or light meal at The Nuttery? A lovely way to spend a couple of hours! If you're feeling full of beans, you can walk over footpaths from Cold Aston (nicer in the spring and summer because it gets very muddy in the winter).

The Cotswold Guide Top Tips

  • Park at the small estate car park rather than on the village street — Notgrove's lanes are very narrow and verges are easily damaged.
  • Walk the loop from the village green out past the long barrow and back via the bridleway — about 2 miles, mostly level, and rarely busy.

Where to eat & drink

  • The Nuttery

The village's only cafe — kitchen and farm shop on the Notgrove Estate; sourdough, coffee, simple lunches in the converted farm buildings, and a welcome stop for walkers and cyclists.

  • The Halfway House, Kineton

The nearest proper village pub, two miles east in Kineton — Donnington ales and Sunday roasts.

Getting there

  • By car

5 miles north-west of Bourton-on-the-Water, signposted off the A436 between Bourton and Andoversford. Park considerately on the verge near the church or use the estate car park if visiting The Nuttery.

  • By bus

limited; the 801 stops in Bourton, then it's a country-lane walk or taxi.

Best time to visit

Late spring to early autumn for the village at its prettiest and the estate footpaths in full use. Quietest in midweek mornings, when you'll have the church and the long barrow to yourself.
