Tetbury

Royal market town and antiques capital

About Tetbury

Tetbury is the King's home town: His Majesty has lived at Highgrove, just outside, for fifty years, and his sustainable food shop sits opposite the 1655 Market House. Royal patronage has shaped a lively centre with two dozen antique dealers, several smart restaurants and a strong independent retail scene.

The town is also the gateway to Westonbirt, the National Arboretum, three miles south.

The Cotswold Guide view

Tetbury is a nice walkable village with lots of antique shops. Good for pottering! Make sure you pop in to the Highgrove shop and get your royal merch.

The Cotswold Guide Top Tips

  • Highgrove Garden tours run from late spring through summer and book up months in advance — but the Highgrove official shop in Long Street is open year-round, no booking required.
  • Visit Westonbirt in late October for the maples at their colour peak.

Where to eat & drink

  • The Royal Oak

Smart pub-with-rooms on Cirencester Road; rotating tap of regional beers.

  • The Close Hotel

Restaurant in a 16th-century townhouse; afternoon tea in the walled garden.

  • Calcot Manor

Just outside town — gastro-pub (Gumstool Inn) and full hotel restaurant.

  • Hobbs House Bakery

The local sourdough institution — pastries, bread, hot bacon sandwiches.

Getting there

  • By car

2h from London via M4 j18 then A46. Pay-and-display car parks behind the Market House.

  • By train

Kemble (5 miles), then taxi or the 882 bus.

Best time to visit

October is unmissable for Westonbirt's autumn colour. Mid-week visits avoid the food-and-antiques weekend crowd. The Royal Three Counties Show in June is a country highlight.
