The home of the heritage railway

About Toddington

Toddington is a small Cotswold village a few miles north of Winchcombe, set just below the western escarpment in a quiet patch of north Gloucestershire farmland. Its claim to fame for visitors is the railway — the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) is headquartered at Toddington station, where the locomotive sheds, the carriage and wagon works and the principal car park all sit. For most travellers riding the line, this is where the day begins and ends.

Beyond the railway, the village is quietly handsome — stone cottages around a triangular green, a Victorian Gothic church by GE Street, and Toddington Manor (the vast Gothic Revival house owned by Damien Hirst) sitting privately behind its walls. Day-trippers come for the trains; the village itself is best treated as a half-day stop within a wider Winchcombe and Sudeley itinerary.

The Cotswold Guide view

Toddington is small and most visitors come for one reason: to ride the GWSR. Park at the station, take a return trip down the line, then walk through the village. There isn't enough here to fill a whole day on its own — but combined with Winchcombe and Sudeley Castle four miles south, it makes a very satisfying Cotswold day out.

If you're after a proper lunch, head down to Winchcombe — the food options there are much wider than in Toddington itself.

The Cotswold Guide Top Tips

  • If you're riding the GWSR, start from Toddington rather than Cheltenham Racecourse — it's the operational HQ, parking is easier, and there's more to see on the platform.
  • Don't expect taxis or ride-hailing to appear at GWSR Toddington station. If you need a taxi back to your accommodation, book it in advance.

Where to eat & drink

  • Flag & Whistle Café (GWSR)

On the platform at Toddington station — railway-run café open on operating days for breakfasts, lunches, tea and cake. The most reliable food stop in the village itself.

Getting there

  • By car

about 5 miles north of Winchcombe on the B4632, signposted from the M5 (J9). Free parking at the GWSR station car park.

  • By heritage rail

the GWSR runs Cheltenham Racecourse — Winchcombe — Toddington — Broadway on most weekends and many weekdays from April through October.

  • By bus

very limited service; treat as a car or rail destination.

Best time to visit

The village is liveliest between April and October when the GWSR is running — locomotive whistles drift across the fields most weekends. The line operates a special Christmas timetable in December and a small selection of winter dates; outside those, Toddington is very quiet.
