Upper Slaughter

The quieter half of the pair

About Upper Slaughter

Half a mile upstream from Lower Slaughter — and a world quieter — Upper Slaughter sits round a small village green flanked by yew trees and the manor's stone gatepiers. The post office is in a Lutyens-restored cottage row from 1906.

The village is one of only fourteen 'Doubly Thankful' parishes in England — places that lost no one in either the First or the Second World War — and there is no war memorial as a result.

The Cotswold Guide Top Tips

  • The footpath from Lower Slaughter joins the village on the south side — keep walking past the church for the best view back across the meadows.
  • The Lords of the Manor restaurant is a destination in its own right; book ahead for dinner.

Where to eat & drink

  • The Lords of the Manor

Country-house restaurant in a former 17th-century rectory; afternoon tea, lunch and dinner.

Getting there

  • By car

0.5 mile west of Lower Slaughter on a single-track lane. Park in the village's small lot.

  • By foot

1 mile riverside walk from Lower Slaughter.

Best time to visit

Anytime, but especially early morning. Even in summer, Upper Slaughter rarely feels busy — the narrow approach lane discourages coach trade.
